Indonesian Songs are Most Popular on Music Streaming Apps

Digital entertainment has become a familiar thing, from watching movies or series to listening to music or podcasts. All forms of entertainment can be accessed from mobile devices or smartphones (hereinafter referred to as mobile entertainment). In addition, social media is also one of the reliable mobile entertainments.

Jakpat conducted a survey to determine the behavior and habits of Indonesians in using mobile entertainment and social media in the second half of 2023. The report involved 2356 mobile entertainment users and 2446 social media users.

The report highlights the use of over-the-top (OTT) platforms such as Vidio, Netflix, or Disney+ Hotstar. As many as 85% of respondents use OTT to watch movies, 77% to watch series, and 27% to watch reality/variety shows. Based on country of origin, the most watched content is from South Korea (73%), followed by Indonesia (57%), and English-based countries, namely America and the United Kingdom (48%).

Head of Research Jakpat, Aska Primardi, revealed that access to mobile entertainment platforms remains a routine activity carried out every day. However, innovations are needed so that users of an OTT do not leave the platform.

“So now an OTT platform is starting to penetrate other entertainment fields, for example, Netflix with game or news menus, so these two fields can be an entry point for new prospective users, and also become other entertainment alternatives for users,” he said.

In addition to OTT, other entertainment is music streaming and podcasts. Jakpat data shows that 83% of respondents stream music while relaxing. In general, pop is a music genre that is listened to by the majority of music streamers with a percentage of 83%. The second and third positions are K-pop (47%) and dangdut (37%). Based on country of origin, music from Indonesia still dominates playlists (85%), followed by America and the UK (71%), and South Korea (44%).

When it comes to podcasts, comedy (47%) and education (43%) are the topics most liked by listeners, especially Gen Z and Millennials. Meanwhile, Gen X tends to be more interested in political issues or the latest news.

Mobile entertainment subscription fee

To enjoy OTT platform content, users generally need to pay a subscription fee. As many as 39% of respondents admitted that they do not mind paying a subscription fee to be free from annoying ads.

Meanwhile, the interest to subscribe to audio streaming platforms for the sake of no ads is quite large among Gen Z with a percentage of 47%. Although, on the one hand, there are 57% of respondents claim they access free audio streaming platforms for now.

Another entertainment that is no less popular is social media. Instagram is the most loved social media where 78% of respondents using it, followed by YouTube (76%) and Facebook (64%). Regarding the topic, as many as 46% of users claim to like to find information related to music/movies/series on social media. Culinary (43%) and cooking (39%) content are also liked by netizens.

Live Shopping & Affiliate Link: Blurring The Line Between E-Commerce and Entertainment

Indonesian consumers are drawn to the effortless purchasing experience provided by e-commerce platforms as the digital landscape develops. The convenience of browsing through an extensive range of goods and making purchases from the comfort of their homes has completely changed the way people buy.  Remarkable speed of which purchases are processed and delivered, oftenly exceeds traditional retail timelines, resonates deeply with the fast-paced way modern- Indonesians’ life.

Jakpat conducts surveys annually to understand this trend. In the first semester of 2023, Jakpat surveyed 1,485 people on the trends in using e-commerce as a shopping medium. The study was carried out between February and May 2023 to understand people’s behavior when purchasing online, how they use e-commerce, and what marketing tactics work best, used by vendors on the platform as well as e-commerce sites.

Jakpat report shows, 88% of online shoppers made purchases during the first semester of 2023. E-wallets or digital wallets are the preferred method of payment when conducting e-commerce transactions, chosen by 72% of respondents who had already made a purchase.

Yet it’s not only about convenience and service speed, but also guarantee of sellers’ credibility in maintaining product’s quality, security, and dependable customer service, have built a sense of trust in Indonesian consumers. This is in line with what was conveyed by Aska Primardi, Head of Research of Jakpat, “The convenience, speed, and credibility of sellers makes online shopping activities still attractive to the people of Indonesia. These values seem to be able to replace the discount value, which has apparently started to decline during the past year. This value is currently seen as the majority of e-commerce’s bare minimum service standard.”

The Phenomena Called Live Shopping & Affiliate Link

Live shopping has emerged as an engaging evolution of the online shopping experience, seamlessly combining the participatory element of social media platforms with the appeal of retail therapy. Jakpat reports, 9 out of 10 online shoppers have visited a live shopping broadcast.

Live shopping broadcasts are hosted by brands or influencers that showcase items and interact directly with viewers despite their location. This personal interaction gives customers a direct line of communication to ask questions, get answers, and learn more about products. Passive scrolling seems to have transformed into a social event, thanks to the live format. On the other hand, the combination of social media and live shopping creates a sense of exclusivity and urgency.

Responding to this phenomenon, Aska stated, “Consumers seek unique value from their shopping experience, and live shopping is one of the examples. Real-time shopping in limited time, spontaneous interaction with the seller and other shoppers, surprises from the host, and the perception as if they are competing for limited stock, will make a consumer become a loyal shopper.”

On the other hand, Jakpat highlights the existence of  affiliate links in online shopping. Serves as a powerful conduit between consumers and products, affiliate links promote a mutually beneficial relationship for both shoppers and content creators. These links, which are frequently included in social media posts or review websites, enable influencers or affiliates to recommend particular products to their audience. This symbiotic relationship between e-commerce, sellers, and content creators, promotes honest product endorsements and gives consumers more control over their buying experiences. Jakpat report reveal that 8 out of 10 online shoppers have clicked the affiliate link in social media, and more than half decided to buy from the link.

How much do consumers spend in a month for online shopping? Do consumers really visit live shopping and make their purchase? How about the competition among e-commerce?

Adapting Consumption Patterns of Mobile Entertainment in Early 2023

In our increasingly interconnected world, mobile entertainment and social media have become an integral part of our daily lives. From compelling streaming platforms to the dynamic realm of social networking, these digital arenas have altered the way we consume entertainment and engage with others.

Every year, Jakpat conducts a survey in order to understand the public’s perspective on the use of mobile entertainment and social media. In this first semester of 2023, surveys were conducted on 1640 smartphone users and 1646 social media users.

Jakpat survey report highlights the use of over-the-top (OTT) streaming platforms such as Vidio, Netflix, or Disney+ Hotstar, as entertainment media that can be accessed by smartphone users. 89% of Gen Z users use OTT streaming platforms to watch movies, 76% to watch series, 23% to watch sports matches, and 21% to watch reality/variety shows.

To enjoy OTT streaming platforms’ content, users generally need to pay the subscription fee. 31% of Gen Z users don’t mind paying a subscription fee to be free from annoying ads.

Entertainment content is certainly not limited to movies, series and other audio-visual shows. Music has long been an integral part of human culture. Meanwhile, podcasts also get a significant portion in accompanying the daily activities of modern people. Therefore, in this report, Jakpat also highlights the use of audio streaming platforms as a medium of listening to music and podcasts.

Unlike the OTT streaming platforms, the majority of users prefer to listen to music for free and don’t mind listening to advertisements. In fact, 27% of paying subscribers pay less than last year for streaming audio platforms.

Another form of entertainment that can be accessed from smartphones is social media. The Jakpat report shows that 36% of users access social media so they don’t feel left behind from current news or trends. In addition, of course, social media still plays a role in influencing consumer behavior, through advertisement content and reviews. Instagram is rated by 25% of users as the most informative social media. 34% of users also feel that Instagram is the most suitable social media for finding products, services or catalogues.

Shifting Trends of Mobile Entertainment

This Jakpat report shows that the trend of using mobile entertainment and social media tends to decrease from the previous year. Aska Primardi, Head of Research of Jakpat emphasized, “Almost all social media have experienced a decrease in the number of users. Like TikTok and Twitter, the numbers are likely to be stagnant from last year. Same thing happened to the OTT streaming platforms. People are still accessing content, but there are indications that they are reducing the number of platforms they use, or choosing to focus on only one of the OTT streaming platforms.”

Aska stated that there is also a possibility that this condition is caused by de-influencing trends, where influencers, or in this case de-influencers, give suggestions not to use a product or service. He added, “Jakpat’s research shows that only about 50% of the public currently still trusts reviews from influencers and celebrities.”

Another factor Aska came up with, was related to duration. “As the pandemic period ends, the duration for people to be able to access mobile entertainment and social media has indeed decreased in 2023.”

Then, how about the performance of the OTT streaming platform and audio streaming platform in the eyes of its users? How do users value social media? Which reviews on social media are the most trustworthy according to users?

E-Commerce Trends in the Second Semester of 2022 in Indonesia

Jakpat published its regular report “Indonesia E-Commerce Trends” for the second half of 2022. This report covers survey results to nearly 3000 respondents about their shopping habits and experiences through e-commerce platforms  during the second  semester of 2022. It shows how users experience shopping on  major marketplace platforms such as Shopee, Tokopedia, Lazada, and others. The report also highlights TikTok Shop’s penetration into the world of e-commerce in Indonesia.

One Comes, the Other Goes

As we know, TikTok is a popular social media with the concept of short videos. However, TikTok doesn’t stop there. The new live video feature makes it easier for users to interact and offers an online buying and selling transaction service  that can be done without leaving the social media application. This breakthrough turned out to get significant attention from the public. Jakpat’s report shows that the number of  people shopping on TikTok Shop in  the second half of 2022 has exceeded the number of online shoppers on several existing e-commerce platforms, such as JD.ID or Blibli.

With regard to JD.ID shutting down its services in early 2023, Jakpat’s report shows that this has no major effect on their users. The reason is that 100% of JD users utilize more than one e-commerce platform during the second half in 2022. These JD.ID users tend to choose to move to Tokopedia when  the platform closes.

Cashback Becomes One of the Most Popular Promotional Programs

Compared to 2021, at the end of 2022, users showed more enthusiasm for promotional programs such as free shipping, discounts, cashback, and flash sales. Cashbackitself attracts the attention of 7 out of 10 users and is included in the top three popular  promotion programs.

Possibly, this is related to the use of e-wallets or digital wallets as one of the most preferred payment methods by users. The use of digital wallets makes it easier for users to get cashback, considering that most cashback promos can be obtained if you use digital wallets. The use of this digital wallet is also popular in all segments, both women, men, as well as Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X.

The case is different with credit cards. Credit card as an online shopping payment method is still not popular enough among Gen Z when compared to Millennials, especially Gen X.

“It is interesting if we see the use of credit cards among Gen Z which is not as much as the generation before them, which is in line with surveys conducted by Jakpat regarding finance and financial technology. One factor that might contribute is the requirements and process of credit card registration which is not exactly easy and quite complicated,” said Aska Primardi, Head of Research Jakpat.

Mobile Phone Usage to Access Entertainment Content and Social Media

In this modern era, we can get entertainment anywhere and anytime, because various sources of entertainment are already available on  our smartphones. According to Jakpat survey report involving 2435 respondents, as many as 96% of smartphone users access entertainment platforms on their mobile phones. One of the entertainment activities that can be obtained from smartphones is watching movies, series or dramas, and other video content such as sports matches. Users can access these contents through OTT or over-the-top platforms, media services that use the internet medium to deliver content directly to their users. The platform is getting more popular, and 9 out of 10 users access OTT platforms through their smartphones. Some of the platforms that are widely used in Indonesia include Vidio, WeTV, Netflix, VIU, Disney+ Hotstar, and many other platforms. Most of the users also use more than 1 platform, for example more than half of Vidio’s users also use Netflix.

In addition to watching video content, music is also part of people’s daily activities. About half of music listeners listen to music while doing other activities such as work (50%), studying (52%), and while traveling (57%). Currently, many music platforms are available such as Spotify, Resso, Joox, and even YouTube Music, a platform from YouTube devoted to listening to music or songs. But more than half of listeners still rely on regular YouTube to listen to music and podcasts. Most users of the music platform apparently listen to music for free, but unlike users of other platforms, most Apple Music users are subscribers.

Talking about entertainment content that can be accessed on smartphones, it’s incomplete if we don’t also discuss about social media. Social media does have various roles, including for entertainment and information sources which are also covered in the latest survey report from Jakpat. In 2022, TikTok was rated by the most users (37%) as an entertaining social media, it increased 5% compared to the previous year. While YouTube (36%), which is also a social media, experienced a decline as an entertaining social media from the previous year so that its position is equal to TikTok. TikTok’s rise in popularity is not only an entertaining social media, but also as an informative one, especially among Gen Z. 1 in 4 Gen Z consider TikTok to be an informative social media platform.

The information that users get from social media is very diverse. Many special topics they search for or get from social media, including information about a product or brand. About 86% of users claim to be looking for information about products on social media. 9 out of 10 also feel that information about the products they get on social media helps them in making a decision whether they will buy the product or not. While 7 out of 10 users also find it easier to contact the customer service of a brand or company through social media.
