Breastfeeding Attitudes and Behavior – Survey Report

Breastfeeding is the main activity of a mother after giving birth. Every parent would want to give the best intake for children. Breastmilk is considered as the best intake for infants, especially 0-6 months. Therefore, exclusive breastfeeding campaign was intensively conducted. However, breastfeeding is often encounter various obstacles, both from the mother’s own internal factors or external factors, such as family or neighborhood. We also made a survey of the behavior of breastfeeding in Indonesia involving 200 women who have or are breastfeeding.

Respondents that we engage in this latest survey consisted of 54.50% working mom and 45.50% stay-at-home mom . We asked this question first, we would like to see the tendencies between working mom and a stay-at-home mom.

Almost all respondents stated that the best intake for babies is breastmilk. This was stated by 99% of respondents.

Then we were asked whether they breastfeed their children, 97.50% admitted to breastfeed their children. While the rest (2.50%) said did not give milk for several reasons. 4 of 5 mothers who did not breastfeed say do not give it because her milk would not come out, while 1 out of 5 mothers admitted more practical giving infant formula.

The benefits of breastfeeding for infant health was the main reason for mothers to breastfeed their babies (81.54%), in addition to forming close bond with children is also a reason (16:41%). Some mothers expressed save money contributed to the reason (2:05%).

The majority of respondents stated feeling guilty for not breastfeeding their children, it is said by 93.33% of respondents. While the rest, admitted not guilty.

Breastfeeding is certainly requires a commitment for mothers to be close to his son. It is a challenge for mothers, especially working mothers. In this survey, we get a slight difference in habits between working mom and stay-at-home mom. Percentage of stay-at-home mom who breastfeed their children live more than the working mom. Almost every working mom admitted to sometimes provide breast milk to their children using a bottle.

Breastfeeding in public is often a challenge also for mothers, especially in Indonesia where nursing room is not always available in public places. Therefore, we also try to ask their opinion about breastfeeding in public. More than half of the respondents said breastfeeding in public is natural (57.44%), there is also that states are unavoidable (25.64%), while others said it was wrong (12%).

In addition to the challenges of breastfeeding in public, we were asked what the most challenging during lactation. Commitment to always be close to the child turned out to be chosen respondents as the main challenge of feeding (26.67%). Moreover, waking up at night into the second rank (21:03%). Attempts to eat certain foods so that her breast milk stays out, is also a challenge for the mothers (17.95%). The pain of it was in the fourth position.

In Indonesia, nursing room may not always be found in a public place. Therefore, breast-feeding in public is a challenge for mothers as we discussed above. We also asked the respondents chose the most challenging public places for breastfeeding. Turned out mall is  the most challenging for the majority of respondents to breastfeed in public (45.64%)
