Indonesian Video Call Habit – Survey Report

Years ago, it would be extremely hard to communicate with our loved one when we were physically separated. You were only be able to communicate using mail or fixed line telephone that cost very much. When it came to the texting era, SMS became the more affordable choice to stay connected. However, today’s digital world has revolutionized the way of human communication. Today, we can easily communicate with our loved one, not only by calling or texting but video calling.

Jakpat conducted a survey regarding youth Indonesian video call habit. We asked our 307 respondents, male and female from the age range of 18-35 year old. With the confidence level of 95%, we collected the data from our panel of respondents in nationwide scale.

Video call becomes the new communication channel that quickly attracts public attentions. Surprisingly, though smartphone and mobile data penetration in Indonesia are categorized as high, but Indonesian video call habit remains low. Most Indonesian only use video call feature less than once a month.

Video call was considered as an expensive way to communicate. It needs to be connected with internet mobile data connection which was quite expensive. However, since the mobile data connection package become even more affordable, video call become more popular than before. There are numbers of application that allow us to make video call, but popular applications to make video call among Indonesia are only dominated by two platforms. LINE becomes the most popular application to video call, due to its ubiquitous and easy operationalization. Furthermore, Skype took the second place.

We ask our respondents about the people they are video calling most often. As predicted, they are more likely to call their loved one. At the second position, they are video call with their friends. Family become the third place of video calling habit. While, at the last position is their working buddy.

Concerning their favourite time to video call, our respondents answer that they are most likely to make video call at night, just before sleeping. Besides video calling at night, they also love to video calling at afternoon, after their working and school activities. At last, they are less likely to make video call at noon, on lunch time.

Surprising fact is found when we ask about respondents’ preparation process before video calling. Though most of them answer that they do not make any specific preparation, but in fact, they actually did. Four out of ten people admit that they are looking for better lighting before a call.

Regarding the issue of preparation process before video calling, our male and female respondents also show different attitudes. In general, male respondent tend to change their clothes and move to another room to make video call. In other hand, female respondent tend to style their hair, look in the mirror, and check the background before video calling. Moreover, they need about 1-5 minutes to be ready just before video calling.

When we ask about the process of video calling, our respondent admits that their average duration of calling is less than 10 minutes. However, it is still considered as a short time for having video call. At last, mobile data network quality is considered as the most important aspect during video call.

Although video call can offer us a rich experience of communication by talking while seeing at the same time, it is still considered as less interesting than instant messaging. Instant messaging is considered as the most interesting communication channel for Indonesian, while video call is just placed at the second. On the following position is phone call and SMS.

Our final question is aimed to understand Indonesian behavioural intention of choosing their communication tools. We ask to our respondents their preference between video and phone call if both has the same quality and price. As predicted, our respondent strongly admit that they will use video call feature more often in the future if it is as easy and cheap as phone call.
