Fashion Trends 2023: Over 50% of Gen Z Buy Formal Wear

Fashion products are always on top of online purchases. Our report for semester 1 of 2022[1] shows that the purchase of fashion items was 33%. Despite declining in the middle of this year[2], at 26%, purchases of fashion products are still number 1.

Jakpat conducted a survey to find out the behavior and habits of buyers of fashion products in Indonesia. The report, which involved 702 respondents, shows what types of clothes are purchased until mid-2023 and their satisfaction levels, as well as considerations in buying clothes.

The report is divided into five categories, namely casual wear, sportswear, formal wear, sportswear, and fashion accessories. The respondents also consisted of four personas, namely efficient, up to date, be myself, and outstanding.

The survey results stated that 88% of respondents consisting of Gen Y (Millennials) and Gen Z have bought fashion products and 79% intend to buy them this year. Nine out of 10 shoppers of this fashion item admit to having casual clothing (such as t-shirts, shirts, skirts, and pants) as their new item. Other products that have been purchased are footwear and fashion accessories with percentages of 75% and 57% respectively.

“Talking about the plan to buy fashion products, it can be seen that more Gen Z are interested in retro/vintage/preloved goods fashion products than Gen Y. This is in line with the high awareness of environmental issues in Gen Z, so they are starting to consider slow fashion culture in the hope of reducing fashion industry waste,” said Head of Research Jakpat, Aska Primardi.

 

Fashion trends in Indonesia

Of those who have bought fashion products, men tended to buy formal wear with a percentage of 59%. Meanwhile, more women bought luggage such as bags or suitcases (46%) than formal clothes (33%).

In terms of generation, more Millennials bought sportswear than Gen Z at 43% and 36% respectively. On the other hand, formalwear appealed more to Gen Z (55%) than Millennials (49%).

“The majority of Gen Z buy fashion products with the consideration that their appearance is always updated with the latest trends. On the other hand, the majority of Gen Y buy clothes with the aim of meeting clothing needs for themselves and their families, one of which is the need to exercise, so here the influence of trends is not too big,” said Aska.

 

Find information about fashion

Social media is the main source of information for finding out fashion products before buying them. Half of casual clothing shoppers rely on a brand’s official Instagram account to find out about what to buy. They also consider recommendations from friends.

Then, sportswear buyers search for information through the brand’s official social media, such as Instagram (48%) and YouTube (46%). Also, the brand’s official Instagram account and recommendations from friends are two sources of information that almost half of formal wear buyers rely on.

More than 40% of footwear buyers get information related to this one fashion product from Instagram, both the brand’s official account and other accounts. Meanwhile, the most source of information for fashion accessories buyers is recommendations from friends with a percentage of 42%.

Gaming & Esports Trends 2023: Mobile & Casual Gamers Dominate

Indonesia stands out as the largest gaming market in Southeast Asia, thanks to the rapid development of mobile gaming and esports. In 2021, the Indonesian gaming market reached a valuation of around USD 1.92 billion, placing it as a promising leader in Southeast Asia.

Moreover, esports in Indonesia has significant achievement potential and encourages the growth of the creative industry. Several well-known Indonesian esports teams that became world champions such as EVOS, ONIC, RRQ, and Bigetron have made achievements in the global arena.

Jakpat conducted a survey to find out the behavior and habits of gamers in Indonesia. The report involving 1191 respondents shows what devices, genres, considerations, and subscriptions gamers are divided into four topics: mobile gaming, PC/laptop gaming, console gaming, and esports. The respondents were also divided into two personas, namely active and casual. Active gamers tend to allocate special time to play games with a minimum duration of 3 hours per session. Meanwhile, casual gamers are more flexible in playing games with a maximum playing duration of 2 hours per session.

The survey results stated that 93% of respondents consisting of Millennials and Gen Z are mobile gamers, 38% are PC/laptop gamers, and 25% are console gamers.

Active gamers are dominated by men with a percentage of 54% while casual gamers are mostly women (68%). Regarding generation, more than 50% of Millennials and Gen Z arecasual gamers.

 

Gaming Trends in Indonesia

Most mobile gamers are casual gamers with a percentage of 55%. Conversely, more active gamers in the PC/laptop gamer category (61%) and console gamers (66%). This suggests that PC/laptop and console gamers should be more engaged with the games they play, as they tend to have longer gaming sessions.

In terms of devices, as many as 55% of mobile gamers use mid-end smartphones. Just like mobile gamers, 4 out of 5 console gamers use the same device category. Meanwhile, most PC/laptop gamers use low-end devices (45%).

 

Esports Trends in Indonesia

Gamers engage in esports by actively playing esports-themed games and following trends in the esports industry. Active gamers engage more in such activities compared to casual gamers.

Gamers have a positive view of the future of esports in Indonesia because they believe that it will have a beneficial impact on the country’s economy. They are optimistic about the growth and development of esports in Indonesia and are looking forward to its expansion and potential in the country.

Wearable Gadget Trends 2023: from Smartwatches to Smart Shoes

The use of wearable gadgets is increasing. Wearable gadgets can be defined as an infusion between technology and equipment or accessories that we can use, such as smart watches, smart glasses, and smart sportswear.

The ability to monitor body health, provide updated information, as well as to increase efficiency and productivity in the workplace is a unique value offered by this gadget. The rhythm of life that requires people to move quickly, efficiently, and be up-to-date also encourages the high adoption of this device on a daily basis.

Jakpat conducted a survey to find out the perspective of the Indonesian people regarding this trend. The report, which involved 843 respondents, shows the most popular wearable gadgets, favorite brands, and considerations in choosing various types of wearable gadget products.

The survey results stated that 64% of respondents have wearable gadgets. Then, 58% of them plan to buy the item in the future.

“Public interest in wearable gadgets continues to increase. If a few years ago they could still move without wearable gadgets, then now the use of wearable gadgets is a must,” said Head of Research Jakpat, Aska Primardi.

“Speaking about the reason for using, their answers will vary, but there is one thing in common between them, namely the trend & hype issue against gadget devices which then grows the character of FOMO (fear of missing out) as a gadget user,” he added.

Smartwatch is the most wearable gadget owned by respondents with a percentage of 68%. The purchase rate of this product is still high in the next half year (66%). Then, 63% of respondents have true wireless stereo (TWS) or earbuds, followed by smartband and VR with percentages of 34% and 23% respectively.
Wearable gadget function

Wearable gadgets are generally used for various activities. Most respondents use it for exercise, namely smart shoes (50%), smartbands (41%), and smartwatches (26%). There are also those who wear wearable gadgets such as VR (60%), TWS/earbuds (38%), smart rings (32%), and smart glasses (22%) to relax at home.

Most smartwatch users use this device for work (31%) while smart tag users are for traveling (35%). In addition, various wearable gadgets are also used for various other activities such as hanging out, studying, playing with colleagues, and parties.
Considerations in choosing wearable gadgets

There are various factors in choosing wearable gadgets. Some of them are complete features, material quality, battery duration, affordable prices, and brands.

Finding information related to the items purchased is mandatory, as well as for wearable gadget enthusiasts. There are various sources that respondents rely on such as other YouTube accounts that discuss targeted products, which are most likely to review the product. In addition, the brand’s official channel is also a reference in buying a gadget wearable product, such as websites, YouTube accounts, and social media (Instagram, Twitter / X, and TikTok).

Generational Differences in Using Digital Financial or Fintech Services

The financial world has witnessed many transformations largely triggered by rapid technological advancements. The intersection between finance and technology has given birth to a dynamic field that we commonly know as Financial Technology or Fintech. Fintech is changing the way individuals and businesses interact with their finances. In the first half of 2023, Jakpat conducted a survey of 1425 respondents in Indonesia regarding the use and habits of respondents in the financial and fintech landscape. The survey, which was later published in the form of a report entitled “Indonesia Fintech Trends 2023″, focuses on several digital financial services such as digital payments, online credit, and investment platforms. In addition, the survey also explored respondents’ financial behavior, insurance, and credit practices.

The Use of Digital Financial Services

In semester 1 of this year, there were 8 out of 10 respondents who used digital payment platforms to make transactions both offline and online. Some digital payment platforms used include e-wallets or digital wallets, mobile and internet banking including virtual debits, and delayed payments service namely Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) or commonly called paylater. According to Aska Primardi, Head of Research Jakpat, awareness and the number of users of financial products in Indonesia continue to increase from year to year, with the most widely used platform being digital payment.

E-wallet is the most widely used service by respondents who claim to use digital payments for transactions. As many as 84% of respondents use e-wallets for various needs such as paying for groceries both offline and online, paying for entertainment needs, to paying monthly bills. Followed by the use of digital or mobile and internet banking with 52%, and paylater for 26%. The use of digital payments is indeed more common among young people, namely Millennials and Gen Z, especially for e-wallets. While digital banks are used by more than half of Millennials and Gen X. Millennials are also the segment most exposed to the use of paylater. Among Millennials who usually use digital payment methods, there are 32% who admit to using paylater services. The most common transactions paid using paylater are online shopping (23%) and paying for food with online delivery orders (18%).

Investment and Insurance

In addition to reviewing the use of various digital payment services, the report also displays data on the use of other financial products such as investment, insurance, and credit. Of all respondents, there are 38% who pay credit installments every month and 24% of respondents pay insurance premiums. While users of investment products are at 25%.

“Users of investment products are at 25%, but after digging deeper, it turns out that not all investment users are users of insurance products. It can be seen that the proportion of Gen Z in the user investment platform segment is 32%, while the proportion of Gen Z in the insurance user segment is 19%. In contrast to Gen X, this segment sees more insurance than investment platforms,” Aska explained.

“If we look at the financial pyramid, then the thing that must first be met is a safety net (for example meeting basic needs, emergency funds, insurance), then followed by investment to accumulate and preserve wealth. This is what Gen Z forgets, where they prefer direct investment to achieve financial freedom, without considering financial “security” first. A common reason why Gen Z is more willing to take risks is because they are currently single and unmarried,” Aska added.
